Wanek Bird Mound

 

Located on the state property, Wanek Bird Mound is hard to find. From the intersection of Highways 80 and 60 north of Muscoda, one

has to drive west on HWY60, 1 mile past Port Andrew, past sand quarry and Wanek Lane to a dirt road on your left, leading through

the field towards the river. Once in the small parking area next to a fence, you're not out of the woods yet (should I say not in the

woods instead?). Since the state property and the mound itself are unmarked and lack any signage whatsoever, The Lower Wisconsin

State Riverway asks that you call in advance for detailed directions at (800) 221-3792 or (608) 739-3188.

  The effigy is completely fenced and seems largely undisturbed. The only problem I noticed was some shrubbery establishing itself

on the mound's surface.
