Dorothy Carnes County Park Mound

  Dorothy Carnes County Park in Jefferson County harbors a hidden gem - turtle mound on top of the highest hill within the park

boundaries. According to the Jefferson County park files, it's part of the Ward Group (not to be confused with Ward Group near

McFarland) - no other information is available about this mound. I found the effigy in good condition, marked by a wooden sign and

with newly installed decorative fence. No other interpretive signage exists at this point, and mound is not even mentioned in the park's brochure. The park is in good shape and well taken care of, though, so I expect the mound will see a good upkeep in the future too.
